Downtown Las Vegas (Fremont Street area) as seen from the top of the Stratosphere, August 2002.
Downtown is where the serious gamblers stay, as the games have better odds. While huge 6-deck and 8-deck
blackjack shoes are the norm on the strip, you'll find less of that downtown. The atmosphere on Fremont
Street used to be very gritty and seedy. It still is, but less so since they put up
the Fremont Street Experience canopy which gives the feeling of being in a shopping mall. Cars no longer
have access to Fremont Street between Las Vegas Blvd. and the Plaza Hotel. (The old TV series "Vega$"
used to show Robert Urich (as Dan Tanna) aimlessly driving back & forth along this section of Fremont Street for
no valid reason.)
